QUALITY CARS, PEOPLE AND TRACK TIME IN THE PALM BEACHES
What does a retired racing driver do to celebrate a 21st birthday?
February 24-25-26, Brian Redman gathered some of his racing friends and automotive enthusiasts at Palm Beach International Raceway. 2012 is the 21st year for Brian Redman’s Targa Sixty Six.
Noteable drivers joining Brian and the members of Targa Sixty Six included: Davina Galica, Roger Mandeville, Gil de Farren, Eric Curren, Shane Lewis, David Hobbs, Vic Elford & Jim Pace.
The rumble of GT40's and AC Cobras was balanced nicely by the shriek of the 2003 Brazilian GP winning Jordan F1 car. The last Cosworth powered car to win a Grand Prix.
Brian was kept very busy providing driving tips and testing some of the cars for the members. Jim Freeman’s Aston Martin was the car that Brian drove in his last professional season and so it was only proper that Brian gave it a few hot laps just to check it out.
Sandra McNeil picked up some tips in her AC Cobra, enjoying it so much that she and Brian will share her car at the Goodwood Revival!
Targa provides its members with abundant track time, great meals & even better company.
Thanks to the relaxed nature of the weekend one is likely to see cars that only come out for this event.
Brad Hollinger’s 2003 Jordan Formula One car was a real treat for all to see & hear!
The Collier Collection sent 6 cars including a GT40 that had both the car & driver wired up by Dr.Lene Harbott and a team from Stanford University, part of the Revs Institute - www.revsinstitute.org - The data gathered will be used to create the great cars of the future by examining the interaction between iconic cars and their drivers. In particular they are interested in how a driver’s brain and nervous system responds to the cars performance, track conditions, other cars etc. The driver is wired for brain wave activity & heart rate.
The driving talent pool went from a shallow end of novices to a deep end full of drivers with vast experience at tracks all over the world.. The more experienced drivers were very busy passing on their knowledge to the first time attendees.
The level of driving through out the weekend was extremely high considering the huge variety of cars out on the track.
Some of the cars participating included....
Jordan F1, Indycars & Indylights, Audi R8's, Aston Martin Group C, McLaren M8, Ford GT40's, Ferrari's of all descriptions from Challenge cars to a GTO or 2, Cooper F1, Lancia/Ferrari F1, Riley MkXXII Track Day Car, Porsche 917, Formula Atlantics, Porsche GT3 and Cup cars, Jaguar E Type, Devin SS, Lola T70's , Porsche 962, Dekon Monza, several Chevrons, Ossella 2 liter, a whole gaggle of Lotus Elise/Exiges, various Sports 2000's, and much, much more.
From the book 'Mark Donohue, His Life in Photographs', shows Donohue discussing tactics with Brian, who wrote the caption: 'Mark, who was retired at the time, was the team manager, and he was obviously unhappy. I don’t blame him. Seeing me in the 917-30, which he had made into such a great race car, must have been a bit like someone else being in bed with your wife.'
Targa Sixty Six was started in 1991 by Brian for owners of vintage and modern high performance and collector cars that do not necessarily wish to race them, but who like to drive at speed under controlled conditions, in the company of others with like interests.
At each event, the following are provided: Three days of track use. Normal schedule is 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. (Members can expect to have 6-8 hours of track time each weekend-more if they feel up to it!)
